Treason Trial of Former DRC President Kabila Begins Amid Political Tensions

The treason trial of former Congolese President Joseph Kabila has kicked off in a military court in Kinshasa, the country’s capital. Apart from treason, Kabila is also facing charges of murder and rape, which are linked to his alleged support for M23 rebels. Though he denies all accusations and asked to be tried in absentia, the case has reignited political tensions. Kabila, who led the country for 18 years, held a lifetime seat as a senator for life with accompanying immunity. However, Congo’s parliament voted to revoke his immunity in May so he could face trial for the charges brought against him. Kabila has been accused of taking part in an insurrectionist movement and plotting to oust the incumbent president, Félix Tshisekedi.
