Suriname Emerges as the Caribbean’s Next Oil & Gas Powerhouse

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, October 15, 2025 – Suriname is rapidly positioning itself as the Caribbean’s next major oil and gas hub, with offshore discoveries, multi‑billion‑dollar investments, and first production on the horizon. The country will showcase its energy ambitions as host of the inaugural Caribbean Energy Week (CEW), taking place March 30–April 1, 2026, in Paramaribo.

Offshore Breakthroughs

Recent discoveries in the Guyana‑Suriname Basin have placed Suriname among the hemisphere’s most promising new frontiers. Block 58, operated by TotalEnergies and APA Corporation, has delivered multiple finds including Maka Central, Sapakara South, and Krabdagu. The flagship GranMorgu development is expected to deliver first oil in 2028, with recoverable reserves of 750 million barrels and planned output of 220,000 barrels per day. Backed by more than $10 billion, it is the largest industrial investment in Suriname’s history and will feature lower‑carbon technologies such as zero routine flaring and an all‑electric FPSO.

Momentum Beyond Block 58

Exploration success extends across neighboring blocks. Petronas has confirmed discoveries in Block 52 (Sloanea, Roystonea, Fusaea), estimated at over 500 million boe. In Block 53, TotalEnergies recently acquired a 25% stake, with the Baja‑1 discovery offering synergies with GranMorgu. Together, Blocks 58, 52, and 53 form the foundation of a scalable oil province with transformative economic potential.

A New Energy Chapter

With recoverable resources estimated at 2.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent and 12.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, Suriname is on track to join the region’s leading producers. CEW 2026 will highlight these developments, bringing together policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to discuss exploration, production, and sustainable growth.

If GranMorgu comes online as planned, Suriname could produce more than 200,000 barrels per day by 2028, cementing its role as a regional energy powerhouse.
