Kabila Slams DRC Justice System After Losing Immunity

Former DRC president Joseph Kabila has slammed the country’s justice system as politically driven after the Senate voted to rescind his lifetime immunity. Consequently, Kabila, accused of treason and supporting the M23 rebel group, is now liable to prosecution. Following the move, he delivered a defiant livestreamed speech from exile, where he denied the allegations and called the justice system a tool of oppression for a dictatorship. Kabila, who ruled the country from 2001 to 2019 after taking over from his father, stated that he remains committed to defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He has been on a self-imposed exile since 2023, but has recently said he will return to help resolve the crisis in eastern Congo.
