South Africa’s Lamola Rallies Global Support for Palestinian Statehood at UN Summit

South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Ronald Lamola, has called on nations to swiftly recognize Palestinian statehood, asserting that such recognition is vital to restoring faith in the two-state solution. Speaking at a high-level UN conference in New York, Lamola condemned the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which he called a “brazen act of genocide.” He emphasized that peace demands collective recommitment to international values and rejected the “might is right” approach. The conference was convened to promote a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Boycotted by Israel and the US, the event gained momentum after France and the UK announced they would recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September. France’s decision is unconditional, whereas the UK will only take this step if Israel fails to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas.
