Expelled Ambassador Calls for South Africa to Uphold Sovereignty

Ebrahim Rasool, the former South African ambassador to the US, received a warm welcome from ANC members and trade unions in Cape Town upon his return to the country. Rasool was declared persona non grata by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio following his critical remarks about Donald Trump’s foreign policy during a webinar. Rasool defended his comments, clarifying that his remarks were an analysis of a political phenomenon – not of a personality, nation, or government. He emphasized the need for an ambassador to restore Pretoria’s relationship with Washington but stressed that it must not come at the expense of South Africa’s dignity and sovereignty.
