Museveni Eyes Another Term as Uganda Heads Toward 2026 Election

Uganda’s long-time leader, Yoweri Museveni, will run for re-election in 2026, potentially extending his 40-year grip on power. His party, the National Resistance Movement, confirmed his candidacy, with Museveni expected to pick up nomination forms on June 28. Museveni, now 80, is one of Africa’s longest-serving presidents. His main challenger is once again Bobi Wine, the pop star-turned-politician who came second in the 2021 polls. Wine disputed the results of that election, alleging ballot stuffing, intimidation, and other irregularities. Critics have long accused Museveni of using patronage and co-opting state security to entrench his rule – allegations he has denied. Museveni took office in 1986 and has had the constitution amended twice to maintain his grip on power.
