Africa’s True Scale Can Accommodate US, China, and India

Abimbola Ogundairo is spearheading a bold campaign to challenge the global dominance of the distorted Mercator map, which shrinks Africa while inflating the Global North. Her “Correct the World” initiative, launched through Africa No Filter, urges institutions and schools to switch to equal-area projections like the Equal Earth map, which fairly represents Africa’s size. Ogundairo argues that these distortions reinforce outdated colonial mindsets and affect how the world views and engages with the continent. Though progress has been slow, support from NASA and the World Bank is helping build momentum. At its heart, the movement is about reclaiming Africa’s rightful space—visually, politically, and psychologically—on the world stage.
