China’s BYD Bets Big on South Africa’s EV Market with Dealership Expansion

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse BYD is accelerating its push into South Africa with plans to nearly triple its dealership network by 2026. BYD debuted in the country in 2023 with the ATTO 3 vehicle and has since grown its network to 13 dealerships. It plans to expand to 20 dealerships by the end of 2025 and 35 by 2026. This move comes as South Africa, Africa’s largest auto market, experiences a rise in new energy vehicle (NEV) adoption, more than doubling sales from 2023 to 2024. Despite challenges like poor charging infrastructure and high import duties, BYD sees long-term potential. With new hybrid and electric models launched in April, the company aims to shape South Africa’s EV future and cultivate awareness as local consumers slowly transition away from fossil fuel vehicles.
