Nifemi Marcus-Bello Explores Copper’s Untapped Potential in New Furniture Collection

Designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello’s latest furniture collection, “Whispers of a Trail,” reflects on Nigeria’s economic challenges with raw materials. Part of his Oríkì series, this collection explores copper, a metal abundant in Nigeria yet seldom refined locally. Marcus-Bello, inspired by the country’s oil industry, created a range of sand-cast copper furniture pieces—daybeds, lamps, side tables, and headrests—after struggling to source raw copper. His process involved sourcing scrap copper from Lagos’ largest scrapyard, highlighting the region’s reliance on foreign refinement and its missed economic opportunities. The collection aims to bring attention to this critical issue.
