South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for another four-year term at the congress in Cairo. The mining tycoon, who also owns Mamelodi Sundowns, first took office in 2021 with strong backing from FIFA president Gianni Infantino. On both occasions, he had a clear path to victory, running unopposed. Meanwhile, Samuel Eto’o, one of Africa’s biggest-ever football stars and the president of the Cameroon Football Association, secured a seat on the CAF executive committee. Representing Central Africa, Eto’o’s election comes mere days after he won an appeal against a decision that banned him from contesting. Five other members, including Liberia’s Mustapha Ishola Raji and Ghana’s Kurt Simeon-Okraku, were also elected unopposed.
