Sudan’s Burhan Unveils Roadmap for Elections and Civilian Rule

Sudan’s military leader, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has outlined a roadmap for constitutional transition, proposing a transitional government, a civilian prime minister, and national dialogue to pave the way for future elections. The announcement comes as Sudan remains engulfed in conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. Speaking at a Cairo summit, Burhan also voiced Sudan’s support for Palestine, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate Gaza and resettle Palestinians. Arab leaders at the summit instead endorsed Egypt’s $53 billion post-war reconstruction strategy, which Hamas welcomed but Israel dismissed. While Sudan grapples with its own crisis, the proposed roadmap could offer a pathway toward civilian governance.
