How the Met Revived Its African and Oceanic Galleries Against the Odds

After 12 years and $70 million in fundraising, the Met’s newly renovated Michael C. Rockefeller Wing dazzles with 1,800 vibrant works from 663 cultures across Africa, Oceania, and the ancient Americas. Despite challenges in securing funds, especially during COVID, a diverse pool of donors, including major collectors and unexpected patrons like Per Skarstedt, came together to support the cause. The upgraded galleries, led by architect Kulapat Yantrasast, now rival the museum’s finest wings. The transformation has sparked renewed interest in tribal art among younger collectors, signaling a cultural shift. With its rich display and heartfelt celebration, the reimagined space sets a new bar for honoring global heritage.
