Niger Moves to Nationalize French Uranium Firm Amid Rising Anti-Western Shift

Niger’s military junta is moving to nationalize Somaïr, a major uranium firm majority-owned by France’s Orano, intensifying tensions with its former colonial power. Accusing Orano of “irresponsible acts” and exploiting resources, Niger says the move will ensure more equitable control and benefit for its citizens. The company, which holds a 63% stake in Somaïr, has declined to comment, though it has filed legal challenges since losing operational control last year. Meanwhile, Niger—Africa’s top source of high-grade uranium—has increasingly distanced itself from France in favor of economic ties with Russia, since the 2023 coup. The development mirrors regional shifts as countries like Mali also assert control over their mineral wealth. Meanwhile, analysts warn that the nationalization could jeopardize jobs and export revenue.
