Trump’s Afrikaner Refugee Plan Sparks Rush of Applications from South Africa

More than 67,000 white South Africans, mostly Afrikaners, have expressed interest in seeking refugee status in the US under President Donald Trump’s executive order. The South African Chamber of Commerce in the US submitted the list to the US Embassy in Pretoria, following Trump’s claim that Afrikaners face racial discrimination and land seizures under South Africa’s Black-led government—a claim the South African government denies. Trump’s order, issued in February, cut US aid to South Africa. It also made the resettlement of Afrikaners a priority, despite his broader stance on limiting refugee admissions. However, how he intends to resettle interested white South Africans remains to be seen.
