Tanzania Bars Opposition Candidate Again, Clearing Path for Hassan

Tanzania’s electoral commission has barred opposition presidential candidate Luhaga Mpina for the second time, just days after briefly approving his nomination. The move effectively clears the path for President Samia Suluhu Hassan in next month’s election, leaving only minor-party challengers. The country’s largest opposition party, CHADEMA, had already been excluded after refusing to sign the electoral code of conduct, while its candidate, Tundu Lissu, remains jailed on treason charges he denies. Rights groups, including Amnesty International, warn that Lissu’s detention and recent abductions of government critics signal a broader crackdown. Mpina’s party, ACT-Wazalendo, condemned the reversal, calling for his reinstatement so he can campaign freely.
