South Africa’s Farm Exports Hit $3.36B as US Tariff Deadline Looms

South Africa’s farm exports jumped 10% year-on-year in Q1 2025, reaching $3.36 billion, thanks to smoother port operations and a 14% surge in shipments to the US. However, a looming 30% US tariff, set to kick in by July, could jeopardize this momentum. Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo has warned that securing favorable US trade terms is now critical. The sector, which hit a record $13.7 billion in exports last year, remains vital for job creation, particularly for unskilled workers, despite contributing just 2% to GDP. Key exports include citrus, wine, and nuts, with Africa, the EU, and Asia also major markets. While agricultural imports also rose 19% to $1.94 billion, South Africa ended the quarter with a strong $1.42 billion trade surplus—highlighting agriculture’s quiet but growing economic clout.
