Ghana Backs Morocco’s Western Sahara Autonomy Plan in Diplomatic Pivot

Ghana has formally endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution to the Western Sahara conflict, joining a growing list of nations aligning with Rabat. In a joint statement with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Ghana’s foreign minister emphasized that the UN should remain the sole platform for resolving the long-standing dispute. The move signals a diplomatic shift, echoing recent endorsements by Kenya and the UK. Beyond geopolitics, Ghana and Morocco also deepened ties on defense, visa waivers, and food security—with Ghana set to benefit from Moroccan fertilizer to boost cocoa farming. Accra also reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s trade corridor linking landlocked Sahel nations to the Atlantic, enhancing regional cooperation.
