Gabon’s Junta Leader Nguema Reveals Presidential Ambition

Gabon’s military leader, Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema, has officially declared his candidacy for the country’s presidential election on April 12, following months of speculation. Nguema, who seized power in a 2023 coup that ended the Bongo family’s 55-year rule, had pledged a transition to civilian leadership. However, the recent enactment of a new constitution and electoral code led to speculation that he was preparing to contest in the presidential election. Nguema, who announced his presidential bid in Libreville, vowed to rebuild the oil-rich nation if elected. While some opposition groups urge him to step aside, others—including Equatorial Guinea’s president—back his leadership. However, questions remain about his military status, with reports stating that he will leave the army permanently only if elected.
