Egypt Warns of ‘Existential Threat’ Over Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a stark warning over his country’s water security amid escalating tensions with Ethiopia over the Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD). During talks with Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Sisi vowed to defend Egypt’s Nile water share, calling the dam an “existential threat.” He pledged to use all measures under international law to protect his nation’s lifeline. Sisi’s remarks come as Ethiopia completes GERD, which Cairo fears will cut vital water flows—a claim Addis Ababa disputes. A decade of negotiations has failed to resolve the dispute, with Ethiopia accusing Egypt and Sudan of blocking its development. The conflict deepened last year when seven upstream nations endorsed a new water-sharing deal, challenging colonial-era agreements that favored Egypt and Sudan.
