Egypt Slams Ethiopia Over “Unlawful” Dam Project

Tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia have reignited after Ethiopia announced the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, set for official inauguration in September. While Ethiopia celebrates the $4 billion hydroelectric project, Cairo accuses Addis Ababa of acting unilaterally without a binding agreement over Nile River water rights—vital for Egypt’s agriculture as well as its 100 million citizens. Despite more than 13 years of negotiations, no deal has been reached on water-sharing or drought contingencies. Egypt condemned the move as unlawful and said Ethiopia’s promises of cooperation mask a deeper strategy of dominance. As diplomatic frustrations mount, Egypt is ramping up local water-saving projects and partnerships in the Nile Basin to safeguard its water future.
