Angola Steps In to Mediate Congo-M23 Peace Talks

Angola has announced plans to mediate peace talks between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group. This marks a shift from previous negotiations that excluded the rebels and instead focused on their Rwandan backers. According to reports, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi met with Angolan officials to discuss direct negotiations, which are set to begin in the coming days. The M23 rebels, backed by 4,000 Rwandan troops, recently launched a rapid offensive that captured several key towns and cities, including Goma and Bukavu. At times, they have also vowed to press forward and capture Kinshasa, the country’s capital.
