Sudan Indicts Hemedti for Genocide Amid Growing Global Pressure

Sudanese authorities have indicted Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed “Hemedti” Dagalo and his brother Abdel Rahim in absentia for genocide and the brutal murder of West Darfur’s governor, Khamis Abakar. The charges follow shocking atrocities, including the brutal killing and mutilation of Abakar in 2023. Fourteen other RSF members were also implicated, as international outrage increases over ethnic violence in Darfur. The indictment comes after the US officially labeled RSF actions as genocide, imposing sanctions on Hemedti, his brothers, and affiliated companies. The ICC is also pursuing arrest warrants, citing chilling comparisons to Darfur’s early 2000s genocide. With the war displacing millions and sparking famine, global pressure is growing for justice and an end to the cycle of mass atrocities in Sudan.
