Gene Drive vs. Malaria: Africa’s High-Tech Fight for Survival

Malaria continues to devastate Africa, claiming a child’s life every minute and draining billions from national economies. But a bold new solution is emerging—gene drive technology. Scientists at Target Malaria are developing genetically modified Anopheles mosquitoes, a major group of carriers, which pass on traits that hinder their ability to reproduce. This initiative aims to break the cycle of transmission by reducing the mosquito population. Unlike broad-spectrum solutions, gene drive targets only the small group of mosquitoes responsible for most malaria cases, offering a more precise and environmentally responsible approach. While still years from deployment, early results are promising, and extensive community engagement and environmental studies are underway.
