Africa’s Green Hydrogen Too Costly for European Markets
A new Nature Energy study has cast doubt on the economic viability of Africa exporting green hydrogen to Europe—unless significant policy support is introduced. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy to split water molecules, is hailed as a sustainable fuel solution for decarbonizing heavy industries. European nations have looked to Africa, particularly Kenya, Mauritania, and Namibia, for cheaper imports, often in ammonia form. However, the report finds that high production and transportation costs make these exports “prohibitively expensive” compared to other regions. To shift the equation, strategic site selection and risk mitigation policies will be essential. The report warns that, without these changes, Africa’s green hydrogen potential may remain untapped on the global stage.
