DRC and Liberia Join UN Security Council with Focus on Peace and Justice

Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Latvia, and Liberia have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, set to serve from January 2026 to December 2027. With overwhelming support—each securing over 178 votes—their election required just one round of balloting. While Latvia will be serving for the first time, the others bring prior experience to the table. The DRC’s foreign minister highlighted the country’s deep understanding of conflict, peacekeeping, and humanitarian challenges, drawn from its own history. Liberia, for its part, emphasized unity and a shared vision for global justice. Together, the new members aim to strengthen peace efforts and address ongoing global crises with fresh perspectives and determination.
