African Development Bank Hits Record 241.9% Capital Growth in 2025

As the African Development Bank (AfDB) gears up for a historic leadership transition, it’s celebrating a decade of unprecedented growth. Under President Akinwumi Adesina, the Bank’s capital skyrocketed by 241.9%—from $93 billion in 2015 to $318 billion in 2025—marking the most substantial financial leap in its history. Adesina described his presidency as a “mission” during a speech at the 2025 Annual Meetings in Abidjan, reflecting on the sacrifices and milestones of his tenure. This includes raising $8.9 billion for the African Development Fund. His tenure has positively impacted the lives of over 500 million Africans in the past decade. With five candidates vying to succeed him, the ongoing 2025 Annual Meetings is set to shape the future of Africa’s premier development institution.
