Africa’s Mobile Gender Gap Shrinks—But Millions of Women Remain Offline

HMobile internet use among women in sub-Saharan Africa is rising, with the gender gap shrinking from 36% in 2022 to 29% in 2024, according to a new GSMA report. However, nearly 205 million women in the region remain offline, due largely to barriers such as affordability, limited digital literacy, and restrictive social norms. Experts warn that these digital divides not only deepen gender inequality but also hinder economic growth. Closing the mobile gender gap could add $1.3 trillion to global GDP by 2030. As success stories like Pakistan show, addressing social and cultural barriers is just as crucial as improving access.
