Gara Tie-Dye: Preserving Sierra Leone’s Centuries-Old Craft

In Sierra Leone, the ancient art of Gara tie-dyeing is being preserved by artisans like Abubakarr Koma, who has dedicated over 40 years to this craft. Originating in the mid-19th century, possibly introduced by Madingo and Susu migrants, Gara involves creating intricate patterns using natural dyes from local plants. Koma’s family has sustained themselves through this tradition, passing it down through generations. To ensure its survival, Koma mentors young artisans, emphasizing the craft’s cultural significance and its role in Sierra Leone’s heritage. This dedication not only maintains the art form but also provides livelihoods and strengthens community identity.
