AU Declares Slavery and Colonization as Genocide in Landmark Decision

The African Union (AU) has officially classified slavery, colonization, and forced deportation as crimes against humanity and acts of genocide against African peoples. This landmark resolution, initiated by Togo, aims to bolster Africa’s quest for self-determination. It is also expected to strengthen Africa’s position in seeking reparatory justice. While some legal experts argue the classification has no legal consequences, others believe it could influence international negotiations and claims for restitution. The resolution may also reshape history education in Africa and support efforts to reclaim looted artifacts. Though largely symbolic, the move is seen as a significant step in Africa’s pursuit of reparatory justice, with future diplomatic and legal actions determining its impact.
