Ghanaian Lawmakers Reintroduce Controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill
Some Ghanaian members of parliament have revived a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill that stalled last year after then-President Nana Akufo-Addo delayed signing it, pending a Supreme Court ruling. However, the court ruling, which dismissed the challenge, came only a few weeks after Akufo-Addo’s party lost the presidential election to the National Democratic Congress. With a new administration in place, opposition MP John Ntim Fordjour and nine others have now reintroduced the bill, defying President John Mahama’s call for government-led legislation. If enacted, the bill would impose harsh penalties, including up to five years in prison for promoting LGBTQ+ activities. Meanwhile, the bill continues to draw condemnation from human rights groups and the international community.
